VeloFinland Mini -webinaarisarja

We are not blocking traffic (planners) – we are the traffic (planners)! Learning from Critical Mass for Better Cycling Planning

For decades, cyclists around the world have taken to the streets to celebrate cycling where cars usually dominate. While Helsinki’s Critical Mass (Kriittinen Pyöräretki) peaked in the 2010s, cities like Brussels are now seeing record participation. But does Critical Mass actually influence local cycling and mobility planning?

In this webinar, we explore how Critical Mass has been treated in scientific literature, how the movement evolved in Helsinki and look into early evidence of its impact on mobility planning institutions and processes.

We’ll combine research perspectives with experiences, and there will be time for discussions on the role of cycling activism in shaping planning practice.  Come ready to share your perspective and learn how collective rides can – and do – inform the future of cycling infrastructure and policy.

Evaluating learning outcomes from cycling-related study visits: Evidence from Oulu, Finland

For the last three years, urban practitioners from abroad have participated in Oulu Master Classes to learn how to build a year-round cycling network. However, the hosts understand that the participants will not be able to copy and paste Oulu’s approach abroad – even cities within Finland struggle to do that.

So, what is the goal? The hosts hope that participants learn the fundamental principles behind Oulu’s approach. This webinar will present the results of a recent master’s thesis evaluating the learning outcomes from these visits.
